Last Tuesday, I read the role of Queen Margaret in "Henry VI, part III." I have to confess, when I was first cast in the role, I thought to myself, "Aw....man. One of the HISTORIES. I really don't have time for this right now." It can be quite time consuming working on one of Shakespeare's history plays. I spent at least an hour reviewing the "real" people and the timeline of the War of the Roses before I even started working on the text. In the end, it was a satisfying project and I am so grateful that I got the chance to live in Margaret's shoes for a couple of hours. Movies I watched this week: ** "Monsieur Lazhar" -- rent this. It's fantastic. ** "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" -- I did some research after watching "Narnia" and found out that the director shot the movie in sequential order, even though it didn't make sense, financially. He wanted to capture the children's blossoming maturity as they went on the quest to find Aslan and go into battle. I think that was a great choice. I also participated in a reading of "Metamorphoses" (by Mary Zimmerman) on Saturday. What a beautiful play! Let me die the moment my love dies. Let me not outlive my own capacity to love. Let me die still loving, and so, never die. Gorgeous. Finally, I saw the cast of "Once" perform a concert at 54 Below. I don't think that they had a lot of rehearsal before their concert. I noticed that they were very alert with each other, making eye contact a lot to "check in". Several times during the concert, a noticed a silent connection between two cast members and then one person would immediately sweep in and "fix" what the other person needed, whether it be the angle of a microphone, more slack in a cable or the turn a page - all with just a look. It was such a joy to watch them take care of each other. Photo credit
