Last Tuesday, I received two (free!) last minute tickets to the New York City Ballet. I was able to see four Peter Martins pieces - Calcium Light Night, River of Light, Barber Violin Concerto, Fearful Symmetries. The best part was that it was a talk-back night: a docent was available in the 4th ring lobby before the show and at each intermission to answer questions and tell us more about each piece. She was very good at her job. After listening to her talks, I felt ready to watch the dances with more sophistication. Thanks, NYCB. I was so grateful for these unexpected treats (...both the tickets from a co-worker and the docent from the company!) On Friday night, Fred and I saw APAC's Blood Brothers. Great show! It's only running for one more weekend, so if you are in NYC and have the chance, go see it! The blog picture for this week is in response to the 9th Avenue Food Festival. You guys....? This was not our thing. It was super crowded and it just didn't match my expectations. I was hoping it would be more organized, like Meatopia on Governor's Island, but it was just typical street fair with carnival games, food booths (same stuff, over and over) and flea market junk and bouncy houses for kids. I don't need to go back. Thinking back on our good experience at Meatopia a few years ago, Fred and I showed up at the 9th Ave Festival dying for some serious tacos, but we found only one Mexican booth in the entire 9th Avenue stretch. The fair opened at noon and when we walked by this booth at 2pm, they had already run out of steak. Whaaaaaat. Fred spotted a Chipotle at 44th Street and that was were we ending up having our lunch. Sheesh. If we had known we were going to wind up eating at a fast food joint, we would have passed on this one. This weekend we also saw the movie Star Trek: Into Darkness. I don't care how big of a dog that Captain Kirk might be, he is smokin' hot. Here's some more life from last week: Left: New Year "wishes" written on confetti at the Times Square visitor center (to be dropped at midnight Jan 1, 2014)
Middle: Lincoln Center. Everything is beautiful at the ballet! Right: I don't know why he's so grumpy...working in a liquor store and all.
