Since I've committed to Holidailies (and it would appear that I've gained some repeat visitors -- Hi there!), I guess -- as a "theater person" I should weigh in on tonight's live broadcast.
I set my DVR and then went out to a fundraiser for my friends at Cake Productions…because I love theater! The NBC special certainly had enough buckaroos behind it; They don't need my support as much as off-off-broadway companies need it. Since some people have asked, I don't malign this TV special at all. Would I like to have seen well-established theater stars in the lead roles? Yes. But theater stars often don't capture TV audiences….and that was the bigger agenda here. Anything that puts an edifying story in front of people (and keeps my colleagues employed, for the rest of the cast was chocked full of some of my favorite performers!) is all right by me. I like to keep an open mind. I'm glad that most of my peers do, too: I logged into my Facebook feed on my phone while riding the train home from the fundraiser and I was relieved that most of my friends didn't have anything bad to say about it. Between their supportive behavior toward "Sound of Music LIVE!" (exclamation point!) (I mean…that just begs for hate-tweeting, right?) and the reverent quotes/thoughts/peaceful wishes for Nelson Mandela….? I have to say, I have a decent lot of Facebook friends. I'm feeling very positive and grateful tonight.
